Wolta “Tokkie” Mtsweni has spent the past 12 years working across sport in South Africa, in roles ranging from team manager to strength and conditioning coach at several rugby unions and university institutions. Now in a managerial position overseeing sport scientists across multiple codes, he remains hands-on as a practitioner supporting athletics and rowing. He is a student with Setanta College.

Below, Tokkie discusses his journey from junior rugby into high-performance sport, the highlights of his career to date, and what studying with Setanta has added to his practice.

Where the Passion Began

Tokkie’s interest in the field grew out of his own experience as a young athlete.

“I have been fortunate to fulfil various roles within sport over the past 12 years, ranging from team manager to strength and conditioning coach at several rugby unions and university institutions. My passion for sport science and strength and conditioning began during my junior rugby career at the Bulls.

Working closely with a sport scientist helped me become stronger, faster and more athletic. Experiencing the impact of scientific training on my own performance inspired a genuine interest in human performance and athlete development. Since then, I have dedicated my career to helping athletes reach their full potential through evidence-based training, performance monitoring and effective coaching.”

Balancing Management and Practice

Tokkie’s move into management has broadened his role without pulling him away from the day-to-day work.

“Since transitioning into a managerial position, my role has evolved significantly. I now oversee sport scientists working across several sporting codes, ensuring that performance services are well coordinated, consistent and aligned with each team’s objectives. My week typically includes staff and multidisciplinary meetings, performance reporting, programme oversight and various administrative responsibilities.

Alongside my management duties, I remain actively involved as a sport scientist supporting athletics and rowing. This includes planning and conducting training sessions, monitoring athlete readiness and training loads, analysing performance data, and providing feedback to athletes and coaches. This combination allows me to support my staff while remaining closely connected to athletes, coaches and the day-to-day demands of high-performance sport.”

Career Highlights

“My career has included several memorable highlights and the privilege of being involved in successful high-performance teams. Winning the Varsity Cup 7s in 2019 was a special achievement, while the back-to-back FISU 7s success in 2019 and 2022 remains another proud moment.

In 2023, I had the opportunity to be part of two major finals with the University of Johannesburg: the Varsity Football final and the USSA Rugby 15s final. My time at North-West University brought further success, including winning the Pirates Grand Challenge in 2025 and reaching the Varsity Cup final in 2026.

Each of these experiences has contributed to my development as a sport scientist, strength and conditioning coach, and manager. More importantly, they have reinforced the value of preparation, teamwork, resilience and creating a high-performance environment in which athletes and staff can succeed together.”

Why Setanta

The structure and flexibility of the programme were key for Tokkie as a full-time professional.

“I was particularly impressed by Setanta College’s structured and flexible approach to learning. As a full-time employee, balancing work and further studies presented several challenges; however, the programme’s clear structure made the learning process manageable and appealing.

I was also drawn to the up-to-date curriculum, particularly the modules focused on sport science, performance coaching and athlete development. The practical and relevant nature of the programme strongly aligned with my professional responsibilities and career ambitions, which motivated me to pursue my studies through Setanta.”

Reshaping His Approach

“Studying through Setanta has significantly reshaped the way I understand and approach human performance. The programme provided a strong foundation in evidence-based practice, supported by current scientific research and its practical application within high-performance environments.

Through in-depth modules covering training modalities, periodisation, athlete monitoring, performance testing and programme design, I developed a greater understanding of how to plan, implement and evaluate effective training interventions. I also learned how to use performance data to make informed decisions, manage training loads and adapt programmes according to an athlete’s individual needs.

Most importantly, my studies strengthened my ability to connect scientific theory with practical coaching. This has made me more analytical, purposeful and confident in my approach to athlete development, while also improving how I communicate and collaborate with coaches and multidisciplinary support teams.”

Advice for Others

“My advice to anyone entering the field of sport science and strength and conditioning is to be patient and take the time to develop your knowledge and practical experience. Learn from everyone around you — coaches, athletes, medical professionals, mentors and fellow sport scientists — because each person can offer a valuable perspective.

Be a sponge for knowledge. Ask questions, observe carefully, remain open to feedback and never assume that you know everything. Qualifications provide an important foundation, but meaningful growth also comes from practical experience, making mistakes and reflecting on what you have learned.

Success in this profession does not happen overnight. Stay curious, remain humble and consistently invest in your development. The more willing you are to learn and adapt, the better equipped you will be to support athletes and make a meaningful contribution to the high-performance environment.”

Looking Ahead

“My vision for the future is to support and mentor the next generation of sport scientists, helping them develop the knowledge, confidence and practical skills required to succeed in the profession. I want to share what I have learned while continuing to learn from the people around me.

Personally, I aspire to become an international strength and conditioning coach and contribute within a world-class high-performance environment. For now, though, my focus is on serving my current institution to the best of my ability — investing in people, strengthening the sport science department and creating an environment in which athletes, coaches and staff can develop and perform at their best.”
