Setanta College is a blended learning institute which offers players, coaches, managers, teachers, physical education teachers and sports science graduates the opportunity to pursue practical coaching courses via the internet learning process (blended learning).

Key Delivery Methods

Internet Study

  • Setanta College students will be expected to study 4 lectures per week for 12 weeks of each module
  • It is recommended to print and study these 4 lectures
  • Lectures become active on Wednesday of each week
  • Lectures are located in the ‘Student Centre’ and with your unique log-in details you can access all lecture material
  • Students are encouraged to place their lectures in an easily accessible location for future reference
  • These lectures are available to the student until the conclusion of the module

Practical Coaching Sessions

  • Setanta College students are encouraged to be actively coaching or personally training during their course of study
  • Weekly coaching hours will contribute to fulfilling the work requirement for the course
  • Such coaching will count for 3 hours each week

Prescribed Essential Reading

  • During the Introductory week of each module, students will be given a list of books to compliment the module study notes. One book will be regarded as Essential Reading material
  • Students will be expected to read/study the Essential Reading text
  • Regarding other books on the reading list, students who wish to study a topic in greater detail are encouraged to read/study the Recommended Reading books
  • Setanta College recommends a total of 5 hours for reading/studying per week
  • These books may be purchased at a discounted rate through our book supplier, Human Kinetics at www.humankinetics.com
  • Make sure you avail of the discount by quoting the access code available at our Induction day

Coaching Assignments

  • Students at Setanta College will be expected to complete 2 assignments during each module
  • These assignments will, where possible, be related to your sport as well as to the particular module/course topic
  • By and large assignments will have a practical focus
  • Completion of the assignments will contribute to the overall assessment in each module/course

Modular System

  • Courses or Programmes at Setanta College will consist of Modules
  • A Module will be a topic or area of study
  • A Course or Programme may consist of as little as 3 modules and as many as 18 modules
  • Our HETAC accredited Resistance Training and Weighttraining course (RTWT) is a 3 module course
  • Our HETAC accredited Certificate in Physical Fitness & Conditioning for Sport 2 (PFCS2) is a 6 module course
  • Our HETAC accredited Level 6 Higher Certificate in Strength & Conditioning is a 12 module course
  • Our HETAC accredited Level 7 Bachelor of Arts in Strength & Conditioning is an 18 module course
  • Each module will last for 12 weeks and will consist of the following:
    • 1 Induction Week - where aims, objectives and learning outcomes of the module are presented. Also the Essential and Recommended Reading lists are posted
    • 9-10 Lecture Weeks - when the lectures are posted and students will read and study them. At regular intervals a series of MCQ’s (Multiple Choice Questionnaires) will be posted. The results of these MCQ’s will be part of the on-going assessment procedure
    • 1 Assignment Week - this will be inserted in the module to allow students catch up on study or attend to assignments or projects
    • 1 Final Project Week - this week will be the final week of a module and during this week, the module project must be completed and submitted to the College
    • Results of the continuous assessment process for a module should be available within 4 weeks of the module ending

Practical Workshops

  • Students at Setanta College will attend at least 2 days of practical workshops during each module
  • These workshops will be held at central locations
  • Course & group tutors will be in attendance for consultation and guidance
  • Some modules will have 4 workshops (i.e. Weight Lifting 1 and 2)
  • Note students will be expected to take certification at Weightlifting Level 1 during the Weighttraining and Weightlifting module

Practical Coaching

  • Students at Setanta College will be expected to be actively coaching during a module
  • This will assist in their application of material learned during a given module

Interactive Discussion Forum

  • Each Module of a course will have a “Students Discussion Forum “
  • It is highly recommended that all students avail of this forum, as updates regarding module details, assignments and workshop dates will be posted on it
  • Students will be able to ask questions, raise issues or discuss the topic of study on an on-going basis among themselves
  • Module lecturers and tutors will be in a position to contribute to the debate when required
  • Students will be able to share ideas on study topics as they deem fit
  • Setanta College will be using a system called “Moodle” and the initial Induction workshop will explain how to use this system

Module Intake

  • Students at Setanta College will be grouped by Intake date
  • There will be three intake dates at the start of September, December and March of each Academic year
  • Modules will continue throughout the summer thus allowing students to complete 4 modules in a calendar year if appropriate

Tutor Access

  • Each group will have a tutor leader appointed to direct the study, work and coaching development of each member of the group
  • Group tutors will be available at practical workshops
  • Group tutors will be available by email or telephone for a number of hours each week for consultation
  • Group tutors will correct all assignments and projects for each course/module
  • Please note that issues regarding assignments are to be forwarded to the Group Tutor

Email Contact

  • Students at Setanta College will be able to keep in contact with group tutors by email each day
  • If necessary they will also be able to email the College for access to the course tutor
  • Notice of general email replies will be posted on the weekly news bulletin board in the Study Centre of the website

Important Notice


As the courses will be delivered by internet study, it is important that students demonstrate the ability to use the net as a communication tool. For this reason:

  • Course Prospectus and Application Forms are downloadable from this site
  • Applicants will be e-mailed their Application Form, where necessary
  • Create a folder and save the Application Form as a file
  • Complete all the details and re-save with the required data included
  • Return the form by attaching it to an e-mail or by post
  • The hard copy must be posted with the module or course fee posted on the same day to ensure enrollment
  • Alternatively, students may make arrangements with the Accounts department by emailing ‘accounts@setantacollege.com’

Instant Progress Feedback

  • Throughout each module there will be Multiple Choice Questionnaires to complete. Feedback on these MCQs will be available instantly
  • Logbook Tasks are video clips, photos or study articles which students are asked to view or study and complete by answering a series of Multiple Choice Questions.

Continuous Assessment

Course or Module completion will be by continuous assessment for all courses at Setanta College.
Assessment will consist of:

  • Results of 5 Multiple Choice Questionnaires
  • Results of  1 Coaching Assignment
  • Results of 1 Final Project
  • Coaching Log maintained during the particular Module or Course (if appropriate)
